Government Affairs Committee

The Grassroots Government Advocacy Committee (GGAC) shall be responsible for organizing ASHRAE members at the grassroots level to influence and educate local, state, provincial, and national government bodies and officials in areas of interest to ASHRAE members, in order to better coordinate efforts and understanding between ASHRAE members and government as well as being responsible for developing the extent and the manner in which ASHRAE implements and pursues actions to influence government affairs and public policy.

First and foremost, chapter members should become acquainted with your legislators. To find your state House and Senate representatives, visit the SC State House “lookup” site here:

Find Your Legislators

There is currently a bill in the SC senate that will make changes to the SC Building Codes. The bill will change who writes the codes, how often they are adopted, and possibly eliminate the Energy Code among other things. ASHRAE is OPPOSED to these provisions of the bill. After you find your Legislators, send a letter stating your OPPOSITION to the bill. Review the Bill here:

Need help drafting a letter? See the link below for an example by a member of our own Chapter. Use this as a guide for your own letter, then send it on! The legislative session will reconvene on January 9, 2018.

Let’s make a difference! ASHRAE Members are the EXPERTS on building systems, construction, energy efficiency and best practices in the built environment. When speaking to lawmakers, let them know how we can help!
